Three ways to scan on a computer
Webcam: press Use camera, allow the camera, and hold the code 20–30 cm from the lens. Laptop cameras can't focus close up, so a bit further away is usually sharper. Use the camera menu to switch to a plugged-in webcam.
A code on your screen (in an email, a PDF, a web page, a video call): take a screenshot and paste it here. Windows: Win + Shift + S, then Ctrl + V. Mac: Cmd + Shift + Ctrl + 4 copies a screenshot, then Cmd + V. Chromebook: Ctrl + Shift + Show windows.
Scan my screen (desktop browsers): share the window or screen that shows the code, and the page reads it from one frame. Nothing is recorded and the sharing stops straight away.
Private by design
The camera only starts when you press the button, and it stops when you press Stop, switch tabs or leave the page. Frames are read inside your browser; no video or picture is sent anywhere.
Can I scan a QR code with my laptop?
Yes. Any laptop with a webcam can read QR codes in the browser: press Use camera on this page and hold the code in front of the lens. No app is needed.
How do I scan a QR code on Windows 10 or 11?
In the browser, use this page with your webcam or paste a screenshot (Win + Shift + S, then Ctrl + V). On Windows 11, the built-in Camera app can also read QR codes in its barcode mode.
How do I scan a QR code that is on my computer screen?
Take a screenshot and paste it here, or press Scan my screen and choose the window with the code. You don't need a phone.
Why is my webcam not reading the code?
Most webcams can't focus closer than about 20 cm, so codes held right up to the lens are blurry. Move the code further away, add light, and keep it still. Reflective phone screens work better with the brightness turned up.
Does it work on a Mac and a Chromebook?
Yes. It runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Scan my screen works in the desktop versions of these browsers, not on phones.
Is anything recorded?
No. The video is read frame by frame in your browser and is never saved or uploaded. The camera light goes off when you stop or leave the page.
