How a case number is built

A case of 12 bottles needs its own number, different from the bottle's, so a warehouse can count cases. The usual way: take the bottle's 13-digit EAN (a UPC-A gets a 0 in front), drop its check digit, put an indicator digit from 1 to 8 in front, and work out a new check digit. That is the GTIN-14, printed as an ITF-14 barcode on the carton.

The indicator has no fixed meaning. You choose one per pack size and keep it: for example 1 for a box of 12 and 2 for a box of 48. 0 means the item itself written as 14 digits, and 9 is kept for items sold by weight or length.

Printing ITF-14 barcodes

ITF-14 barcodes are usually printed straight onto cardboard, so they are big, with a thick bearer bar around them that keeps the bars readable on rough print. This site only reads codes; you can make the barcode itself on our sister site.

[03] Questions5

What is an ITF-14 barcode?

A barcode for outer cases and cartons. It holds a 14-digit GTIN and uses the Interleaved 2 of 5 symbology, which prints well on corrugated cardboard.

How do I make an ITF-14 number from a UPC?

Add a 0 in front of the UPC-A to make 13 digits, drop the last (check) digit, put the indicator in front, and calculate a new check digit. Type the UPC here and pick the indicator.

What does the first digit of a GTIN-14 mean?

It is the packaging indicator. 1 to 8 are different pack levels of the same item, chosen by the company. 0 is the item itself, 9 is a variable-measure item.

Is ITF-14 the same as GTIN-14?

GTIN-14 is the number. ITF-14 is one kind of barcode used to print it. The same GTIN-14 can also be printed in a GS1-128 or GS1 DataBar barcode.

Do I need GS1 membership for ITF-14?

The item's own barcode number must come from a GS1 company prefix if the cases go to retailers or distributors. The case numbers are then built from those numbers.
